The Who by Numbers is the seventh studio album by the British rock band The Who . The 1975 released album was produced by Glyn Johns . The cover was drawn by the band bassist John Entwistle , who was working on the story of The Who in the form of a comic at the time.

The album lacks the complex structure and ambition of the better-known The Who works Tommy and Quadrophenia . Rather, the focus is on the songwriting of Pete Townshend , who deals with the topics of alcoholism , desire and self-hatred. Therefore there is a dark mood throughout the album.

A special pressing of this album came out in Italy on the Neon label, a subsidiary of RCA . The label showed the birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli on the A-side .
