Live at Leeds is an album by the British rock band The Who , recorded live at the University of Leeds on February 14, 1970 and released in May 1970. The music magazine Rolling Stone ranks the album at number 170 on their list of the 500 best albums of all time .

Album cover and publication

The album initially came out in a folded brown envelope. The titles were printed on the cover in different colors. They tried to give the impression that this was a bootleg album. There were numerous copies of documents inside the album. There was a poster of the performance at the Marquee Club in London , the contract for the performance in Woodstock , the original of the text from My Generation , an announcement for The High Numbers , the announcement for the performance at the Marquee Club, a letter from the agency King, EMI's letter of rejection for The High Numbers , a smoke bomb delivery note, a photo of the audience, an official photo of the band, a list of performances and fees, a picture of Pete Townshend jumping in Woodstock, and the recovery letter from a musical instrument store for a guitar and a piano.

It was originally planned to publish the gig in Hull that took place one day later . Due to technical problems, however, the recordings of the Leeds concert had to be used. In 2010 the Hull concert - together with the recordings of the Leeds concert - was published in a special edition.

In 2019, Pete Townshend said: "We invented Heavy Metal with 'Live At Leeds'".
