(1967)

A Quick One is the second music album by the British rock band The Who . The LP was released in December 1966. In the USA, the album was released with a different series of titles under the title Happy Jack , after the song of the same name, which was a minor success in the US hit parade.

A Quick One is considered a musical turning point for the group, which was able to develop more freely than was possible on the debut album.

Particularly interesting is the title track of the album A Quick One, While He's Away , which represented Pete Townshend's first step towards rock opera and can be seen as a harbinger of the upcoming concept albums Tommy and Quadrophenia . The nine-minute piece tells the story of marital infidelity, the confession of the same and the forgiveness of the betrayed in six parts. During a guest appearance for the Rolling Stones as part of the " Rock and Roll Circus " on December 11, 1968, this piece was performed in full.

Chris Stamp, the group's co-manager at the time, had signed a special deal with Who music publisher that brought in £ 500 advance payment for each songwriter . So it happened that each band member had to contribute at least one title to the album. This led to A Quick One becoming the Who album least dominated by Pete Townshend as a composer.

The recordings for this album took place from August to November 1966 at IBC Studios and Pye Studios in London. Produced a quick one by Kit Lambert .

In Germany Polydor released an album in 1966 called The WHO with pieces by A Quick One except So Sad About Us and A Quick One, While He's Away , but with the pieces In the City , Circles , Disguises and I'm a Boy .
