The Martin Luther Church in Lienz is the parish church of the Protestant parish of Lienz . The parish belongs to the Evangelical Superintendent of Carinthia and East Tyrol . The church is located on the northern bank of the Drau at Amlacher Straße 14.

history

In the 19th century there were hardly any people of Protestant faith in East Tyrol. Only with the construction of the railway connection from Villach to Franzensfeste via Lienz did Evangelicals from Carinthia increasingly migrate to Lienz. The first sermon point was set up in 1913 by the parish of Gries near Bozen, and for a long time the evangelical services were celebrated in a church service room in the Hotel Eck on the main square in Lienz. After the end of the Second World War saw another strong influx of people of Protestant denomination and the Protestant community in Lienz had grown significantly, a separate pastor was appointed for the first time in 1947. In addition, a wooden emergency church was opened on December 8, 1947, to which its own parsonage was added in 1948. After Lienz became a daughter parish of the Spittal ad Drau parish in 1954, it was elevated to an independent parish in 1957. The current church was built between 1960 and 1962 according to plans by Lois Untersteggaber, a new rectory was added in 1968 on the western side of the church. From 1968 to 1980, the future Bishop Herwig Sturm worked as a pastor at the Martin Luther Church.

The Lienz parish is not only responsible for the entire Lienz district, but also looks after parts of the neighboring Carinthia. Church services are also held in Winklern , Dellach im Drautal , Steinfeld and Greifenburg .

Building description

The Martin Luther Church is a four-bay long building with a recessed, recessed apse . A transverse wing in the form of a vestibule was placed in front of the long building on the east side, which houses the entrance hall with the community hall. There is a massive church tower on the northeast side . Externally, the building is made of exposed stone, with the inside walled up with bricks. The entrance hall was generously glazed. The roof of the church was designed as a gable roof, while the apse was provided with a conical roof and the tower was also provided with a flat gable roof. The tower also has a west-facing entrance, small windows in an irregular arrangement and openings in the bell area, which were provided with white vertical struts. The tower roof is crowned by a cross, and three bells from Grassmayr from Innsbruck-Wilten are available for ringing.

The interior of the church was provided with a flat barrel vault, with the chancel being raised by steps and a semicircular arch. The lengthways walls of the main room-like room are interrupted by generous glazing, which was designed as antique glazing. An organ gallery rises above the community hall. The altar was designed as a simple wooden altar, behind which there is a large wooden cross.
