Herwig Robert Sturm (born August 15, 1942 in Lilienfeld ) is an Austrian Evangelical Lutheran theologian . From 1996 to 2007 he was Bishop of the Evangelical Church AB in Austria .

Life

Herwig Sturm is a son of the theologian Emil Sturm . He went to school in Salzburg and studied Protestant theology in Vienna , Heidelberg and Zurich . He was vicar at the Resurrection Church in Zell am See and the Martin Luther Church in Lienz . In 1968 he was in the Lutheran town church in Vienna ordained .

From 1968 to 1980 Herwig Sturm worked as a pastor at the Martin Luther Church in Lienz and as a part-time military pastor . From 1980 to 1988 he was pastor at the Christ Church in Klagenfurt . In 1985 he became senior in the diocese of Carinthia and East Tyrol and deputy to the then superintendent Paul Pellar . As his successor, Herwig Sturm himself became Superintendent of the Diocese of Carinthia and East Tyrol in 1988. In October 1995 he was elected Bishop of the Evangelical Church A. B. in Austria by the Synod . He took up this position in 1996. His successor as Superintendent of Carinthia and East Tyrol was Joachim Rathke . Sturm's term of office as bishop ended on January 1st, 2008. On June 1st, 2007 Michael Bünker was elected as his successor.

Herwig Sturm was chairman of the World Council of Churches in Austria for the 2006–2007 and 2008–2009 periods . His successor in this function was the Romanian Orthodox Episcopal Vicar Nicolae Dura.
