Joachim Rathke (clergyman)

Joachim Rathke (born December 6, 1936 in East Prussia ; † February 25, 2018 ) was an Austrian Lutheran theologian and superintendent of the Carinthia / East Tyrol diocese of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (AB) in Austria .

biography

At the end of the war in 1945, Joachim Rathke fled with his family from the approaching Red Army to Carinthia in Austria. He did his Matura in Villach and then began studying theology at the universities of Vienna and Mainz . Rathke obtained his master's degree . He completed his teaching vicariate with Paul Pellar , who later became superintendent of Carinthia and East Tyrol.

In 1963 Joachim Rathke took over his first pastor's position in the community of Fresach . In 1965 he moved to the city of Villach , where he served as pastor for thirty years.

In 1996 Rathke was elected superintendent and thus spiritual director of the diocese of Carinthia / East Tyrol of the Lutheran Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Austria. He took over this office from Herwig Sturm (later Bishop of the Austrian Church) and worked until his retirement in 2001. His successor was Manfred Sauer .

Rathke was married and had three children.

Honor

Joachim Rathke was awarded the title of Hofrat and the Carinthian State Order in silver.
