Dynów ( German : Dünow , Denoph ) is a Polish city ​​in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship in the powiat Rzeszowski .

Geographical location

The city is located in southern Poland on the San River . Rzeszów is about 30 kilometers northwest and Przemyśl 40 kilometers east of Dynów.

The urban area is 250 to 270  meters above sea level at the eastern foot of the Dynów Mountains .

history

The first mention of the place dates back to 1423. Whether the place already at this time the town charter had is unclear. Six years later, Dynów, then known as Denow or Denov , was named as a town. The city charter was granted according to Magdeburg law . A parish school was also inaugurated during the 15th century. From 1512 the city was allowed to hold two annual markets . On 19./20. February 1657 the army of George II Rákóczi reached the city and destroyed large parts of Dynów, including the parish church.

In 1663 the town church, which was destroyed in 1657, was rebuilt. In 1772, when Poland was first partitioned , the city came under the rule of Austria . In the 19th century it was also called Dünow. In 1904 Dynów was connected to the rail network. After the First World War , the city came to re-established Poland and at the same time lost its city ​​charter . On September 13, 1939, the Wehrmacht occupied the city as part of the attack on Poland . Shortly afterwards, on the night of September 18-19, the Germans burned the Dynów synagogue to the ground. At the same time, around 300 to 400 Jews were murdered in mass executions. On July 28, 1944, the occupation of the city by the Wehrmacht ended. In 1946 Dynów was given town charter again.

Due to a reform of the administrative structure of Poland, the city came to the Przemyśl Voivodeship in 1975 . After another reform, the city has been part of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship since 1999.

Population development

In 1510 about 710 people lived in the 142 houses of Dynów, in 1589 there were 784 inhabitants in 157 houses. In 1653 1089 people lived here. In 1662 only 136 people lived in the city. Meanwhile, under the rule of Austria, 1,537 inhabitants were counted in 1777, in 1785 there were 2,203 of which 1,493 were Catholic. After the Second World War, the population was 4,961 in 1946. This fell to 3,520 over the next four years. In 1971 it was 3,717, in 1990 it was 5,743.

Gmina

The city of Dynów forms an independent municipality ( gmina miejska ). At the same time, there is an independent rural community of the same name, to which nine school offices belong. In total, the community has an area of ​​119 km², on which 6913 people live (June 30, 2019).

The city is intersected by the provincial road 884 ( droga wojewódzka 884 ) in an east-west direction. In the urban area, it crosses Voivodeship Road 835, which runs from north to south. Dynów is the terminus of the Przeworsk – Dynów narrow-gauge railway .
