Martin Alioth

Martin Alioth (* 1954 in Basel ) is a Swiss historian and journalist .

After graduating from high school in Basel, Martin Alioth studied general history of the Middle Ages and modern times as well as economics in Basel and Salzburg . After graduating, he worked as a research assistant at the Basel Historical Museum . In 1988 he received his doctorate in Basel with a thesis on medieval Strasbourg .

In 1984 he emigrated to Ireland with his then wife, the writer Gabrielle Alioth , near Dublin , where he initially worked as a freelance correspondent for newspapers such as the NZZ and radio . Since 2000 he has been the UK correspondent for Radio DRS and SRF . From 2003 to 2018 he wrote for the NZZ am Sonntag . He also regularly contributes to German and Austrian media, such as Spiegel , ORF and Deutschlandfunk . At the beginning of April 2020, he retired as a correspondent for Radio SRF.
