Martín Balza

Martín Antonio Balza (born June 13, 1934 in Salto , Province of Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine officer and diplomat .

Life

Balza was born in the city of Salto , about 200 km from Buenos Aires , in the province of Buenos Aires. Balza began his military career in February 1952 as a cadet at the State Military Academy in Buenos Aires. He left the academy in December 1955 as a second lieutenant in the artillery , after having completed training for mountain troops , among other things .

Balza then entered the civil service . From 1962 to 1966 he was a trainer at the Colegio Militar de la Nación , from 1968 to 1970 in the same position at the Escuela de Artillería . 1970 served as military observers of the United Nations on the Sinai Peninsula in use.

In the 1970s he completed his training as a staff officer . From 1971 to 1973 he attended the Escuela Superior de Guerra del Ejército Argentino , from 1976 to 1977 the Escuela Superior de Guerra del Perú in Peru . He completed these courses as an officer in the General Staff . In 1978 he became head of the training department ( Jefe del Departamento Enseñanza de la Escuela de Artillería ) at the Escuela de Artillería . 1979 and 1982 he was professor at the Escuela Superior de Guerra del Ejército ; there taught, among other things, the subjects of military tactics , military strategy and military history .

In 1978 he took part in the Operación Soberanía as a lieutenant colonel ; he commanded an artillery unit of about 500 men, which was stationed on the Andean pass Paso Puyehue (today: Paso Fronterizo Cardenal Samoré ). In 1982 he was a lieutenant colonel in the artillery in the Falklands War in the military.

From 1984 to 1986 he was deputy head of the Colegio Militar de la Nación .

In 1987, under the presidency of Raúl Alfonsín , he was appointed general . In the same year he took over the role of inspector general of the artillery. From 1987 to 1988 he was commander of the 6th Mountain Brigade and from 1992 to 1999 Chief of Staff of the Army . During his tenure, general conscription was lifted.

From 2000 to 2002 he was an advisor to the United Nations in Honduras ; his areas of responsibility were military reform, strengthening and promoting democracy and population development .

From 2003 to 2011 he was Argentina's ambassador to Colombia under the governments of Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández .

Balza wrote, partly as a co-author, several books and collections of articles. He also wrote magazine articles . He is the recipient of numerous national and international orders and awards.
