Martin Canin (born 1930 in New York City ; † May 9, 2019 ) was an American pianist and music teacher .

Life

Canin was a piano student in New York with the Austrian pianist and composer Robert Scholz , Aurelio Giornis and Olga Samaroffs . He studied music analysis with Stefan Wolpe and piano at the Juilliard School with Rosina Lhévinne , whose assistant he was from 1959 to 1976. In addition to his work at the Juilliard School, he taught at the Teachers College of Columbia University (1959–76) and Stony Brook University (1965–1993), he was visiting professor at the City University of New York and New York University and has been involved since 1971 at Bowdoin College Summer Music School .

Canin also gave international master classes for pianists, took part in piano competitions as a juror and worked as a writer and editor for Piano Quarterly magazine . As a pianist he was both chamber music and soloist and performed in the USA as well as in Europe and Asia. In 2006 he was a guest at the First Aloha International Piano Festival and gave a solo concert there.
