Martin Carrier

Martin Carrier (born August 7, 1955 in Lüdenscheid ) is a German philosopher and professor of philosophy at Bielefeld University with a focus on the philosophy of science . He is one of the winners of the 2008 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize .

Life

Carrier studied physics, education and philosophy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 1975 to 1981 . There he received his doctorate in 1984 with a thesis on the theory of science ("Atoms and Forces: The Development of Atomism and Affinity Theory in the 18th Century and the Methodology of Imre Lakatos '"). Carrier obtained his habilitation in 1989 with a thesis on the relationship between theory and experience in space-time theories at the University of Konstanz , where he worked until 1994. In 1994 he received a professorship at the University of Heidelberg , and in 1998 he was appointed to the University of Bielefeld . Here he was a member of the board of directors of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) and the board of the Institute for Science and Technology Research (IWT). In 2008 Carrier was appointed to the University Council of Bielefeld University.

Carrier has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina since 2000 . In 2010 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . He is also a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences .

Focus of work

The focus of Carrier's work is the philosophy of science , in particular the “change in theories in the sciences” and the conceptual relationships between different theories, as well as the current question of the extent to which the strong pressure on application-oriented research threatens to damage its epistemic (“epistemic”) core . In 2001 he published a biography of Nikolaus Kopernikus in Verlag CH Beck, in which his scientific achievements are presented in particular.
