Gereon Wolters (philosopher)

Gereon Wolters (born March 11, 1944 in Geilenkirchen-Leiffarth ) is a German philosopher.

Life

Wolters initially studied Catholic theology at the University of Innsbruck from 1965 to 1967 . In 1967 he changed the subject and studied philosophy and mathematics for teaching at the University of Tübingen until 1969 . In 1969 he switched to the same subjects at the University of Kiel , where he completed his studies in 1972 with the state examination.

Wolter's doctorate in philosophy took place in 1977 at the University of Konstanz . Here he was a research assistant from 1975 to 1980 and an academic councilor until 1988. His habilitation for philosophy and the history of science took place in 1985. In 1984 he had a teaching position for philosophy of biology at the Zoological Institute of the University of Zurich. In the 1997/98 winter semester he was a Research Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh . Between 2001 and 2004 he took on the role of Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He also worked as a reviewer for the Academy for Technology Assessment in Baden-Württemberg, among others .

Wolter's research focuses on Ernst Mach's philosophy of science , the philosophy of the Vienna Circle and the philosophy of biology as well as the philosophy of National Socialism . In addition to Jürgen Mittelstraß, Wolters was co-editor of the encyclopedia Philosophy and Philosophy of Science and editor of the journal Gaia - Ecological Perspectives in Natural, Human and Economic Sciences and the Pittsburgh-Konstanz Series in the Philosophy and History of Science . After his retirement in 2009 he worked on the research project “Pious Knowledge? Christianity and Evolution " at the" Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study "in Wassenaar / Netherlands.

Wolters continues to head the Konstanz Philosophical Archive, whose holdings include materials on the history of philosophy and the theory of the exact sciences as well as documents on the entanglement of philosophy and science in National Socialism . Since 2004 he has been a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 2010 Wolters was elected spokesman for class IV (history, cultural, behavioral and social sciences) at the Leopoldina. He is also chairman of the philosophy of science section. In 2010 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea .
