Martin Christoffel

Martin Christoffel (born September 2, 1922 in Basel , † April 3, 2001 in Rombach ) was a Swiss chess player .

Tournament chess

Christoffel was a member of the Baden Chess Society. He was Swiss champion four times , namely in 1943 in St. Gallen , 1945 in Lugano , 1948 in Bern (after a playoff with Fritz Gygli ) and 1952 in Zurich . In 1944 he won the Coupe Suisse.

A great international success was in London in 1946, second place behind Euwe . In the international tournament in Zurich in 1952, he and Euwe took second place behind Lundin. In 1952, Christoffel became the FIDE international champion .

After his retirement he became more active again. Between 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994 he won the Swiss Senior Championship four times.

Correspondence chess

Christoffel was also active in correspondence chess. He took part in the 9th, 10th and 11th Olympiad. In 1989 he received the title of International Correspondence Chess Master , in 2000 the title of Honored International Master . He was also instrumental in founding the Swiss Correspondence Chess Association (SFSV).

The organizer

From 1983 Christoffel directed the Swiss distance tournaments. From 1987 to 1991 he was the central president of the Swiss Chess Federation . At times he was a member of the board of the Swiss Correspondence Chess Association (SFSV).
