Martin Eigner (born May 9, 1951 in Brandenburg an der Havel ) is a German mechanical engineer and until 2017 was a university professor and holder of the chair for virtual product development at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . He is considered one of the pioneers in the fields of product lifecycle management and system lifecycle management.

Brief CV

Eigner studied mechanical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) from 1970 to 1976 . From 1977 to 1980 he studied for a doctorate at the Institute for Computer Applications in Design. In 1980 Hans Grabowski made him 'Dr.-Ing.' With his thesis "Semantic data models as aids in information handling in CAD systems and their technical implementation on small computers". PhD. From 1980 to 1985, Eigner worked in technical data processing and organization at Robert Bosch GmbH in Bühlertal , initially as a specialist and group leader, and later as a department head.

In 1985 he founded Eigner & Partner GmbH, which he headed as a managing partner and, after conversion into a stock corporation, as chairman of the board and later as CTO of Eigner Inc. in Waltham, Massachusetts (USA). In 2001 he founded the consulting company Eigner Engineering Consult, which he is still managing director today. In addition to his entrepreneurial activity, Eigner has been teaching university since 1984. In 1994 he was appointed honorary professor of the state of Baden-Württemberg , in 1999 he was awarded an honorary professorship by the University of Karlsruhe (TH) . From 2004 to 2017 he headed the Chair for Virtual Product Development (VPE) at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern . His main research interests included work in the areas of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), System Lifecycle Management (SysLM), Industrial Internet (including Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT) and Services (IoS) or Internet of Everything (IoE)), Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Product Line Engineering (PLE).

In addition to his professional and scientific work, Eigner is involved in committees of various industry and professional associations. Martin Eigner is an honorary member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) . In 1995 he was awarded the VDI Ring of Honor. In 2009 he and the Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern received the prize in the “Competition for Excellent Teaching” of the Donors' Association for German Science . In the same year he was named Germany's Professor of the Year in the field of engineering by UNICUM and KPMG . In 2010, the Academic Council of the TU Sofia awarded Martin Eigner the gold medal and certificate of honor on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Faculty for German engineering and business administration training and his contribution to the establishment and further development of the faculty and to the popularization of the TU Sofia in the Federal Republic Germany .

Private

Martin Eigner is a passionate helicopter pilot and President of the German Helicopter Club. At the Open German Helicopter Championship in 2014, Martin Eigner and his co-pilot Thorsten Strohmaier landed at the top. They became German champions for the first time. The placement also has an influence on a possible qualification for the upcoming World Cup in 2015. Martin Eigner and Thorsten Strohmaier achieved fourth place in the Nations Cup at the 2015 Helicopter World Cup with the Germany team. Martin Eigner and co-pilot finished in the European Helicopter Cup 2016 first place in the navigation discipline and also became German runner-up in 2016.

The focus of the competition is helicopter precision flying, in which the helicopter crews consisting of pilot and co-pilot measure their skills. Skill and navigation competitions are held that are based on real helicopter rescue operations - for example in the event of natural disasters such as floods or avalanches - and therefore have a very serious background. The individual disciplines correspond to those that are also completed at world championships, and are set according to the specifications and rules of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) . The standardized tasks include navigation flight, slalom, fender rigging and precision hovering.
