Martin Fiebig

Martin Fiebig (born May 7, 1891 in Rösnitz , † October 24, 1947 in Belgrade ) was a German officer , most recently General der Flieger , of the German Air Force during the Second World War .

Life

Fiebig joined the infantry regiment "von Grolmann" (1. Posensches) No. 18 as an ensign on March 3, 1910 and initially worked there as a company officer. With the outbreak of World War I he was appointed battalion adjutant. At an unknown point in the course of 1915, he transferred as an aircraft and squadron leader to Bomber Squadron 3 of the Supreme Army Command . Fiebig held this position until August 1, 1918. He then acted from August 2, 1918 to February 1919 as commander of bomber squadron 9 and retired from active military service in the same month.

As a civilian, Fiebig worked as a flight controller at Deutsche Lufthansa from 1926 to the end of April 1934 . On May 1, 1934, he was reactivated as a major for the Luftwaffe, which was being secretly established . Here he was initially used as an air base commander in Greifswald . From 1936 to the end of June 1938, Fiebig was the commander of the fighter flying school in Faßberg . Following this, meanwhile promoted to colonel , he was from July 1, 1938 to May 10, 1940, commodore of Kampfgeschwader 253 and 4 General Wever . Here Fiebig was shot down with his plane on May 10, 1940 in the course of the western campaign over Holland and was temporarily taken prisoner in the Netherlands . After his liberation by German troops, he was the commander of a combat group with the Guderian tank group . After the end of the campaign, he became head of flight safety in the Reich Aviation Ministry , which he remained until April 1, 1941.

From April 2, 1941 to April 11, 1942, Fiebig was hand-to-hand combat leader in the IV. Air Corps , later in the II. And VIII. Air Corps . On April 12, 1942 he was commander of the 1st Flieger Division and remained so until the end of June 1942. Subsequently, Fiebig rose to Commanding General of the VIII Fliegerkorps on July 1, 1942 , but switched to the same position on May 22, 1943 X. Fliegerkorps and led this until September 1st of the following year. In this function he also acted as the commander of the Air Force Command Southeast. From September 1, 1944 to January 31, 1945, Fiebig was temporarily in the Führerreserve at the Air Force High Command . From February 1 to April 12, 1945 he acted again as commanding general of the II. Air Corps and then from April 12 to May 8 as commander of the Northeast Air Force Command .

On May 8, 1945, Fiebig was first taken prisoner by the British , but was transferred to Yugoslavia on February 6, 1946 , where he was found guilty in a war crimes trial on September 10 and sentenced to death . The enforcement of the judgment was made on 24 October 1947th
