Martin Grützmacher

Martin Georg Grützmacher (born November 10, 1901 in Heidelberg ; † October 11, 1994 ) was a German physicist and acoustics expert at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB).

After childhood and youth in Heidelberg, Grützmacher first began studying at the Technical University in Danzig and then went to Münster, where he received his doctorate in physics in 1924. His doctoral thesis dealt with the dielectric properties of liquids.

It was only through his collaboration with the Telegraph Technology Reichsamt that he came to his future research field - acoustics. In 1930 he became head of the acoustic laboratory in the Reichspostzentralamt . At that time he was working with Erwin Meyer on the jointly developed search tone analysis for measuring the spectra of musical instruments.

In 1934, Johannes Stark brought Grützmacher to the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR), the forerunner of the PTB. As a member of the government, he built the acoustics laboratory there. The PTR acoustics laboratory had also been entrusted with military tasks since it was founded in 1934. During the Second World War, his Department VI (mechanics and acoustics) worked in particular in the exploration of the sound field of moving ships for the control of torpedoes and for acoustic mines. Because of the bombing raids on Berlin, the acoustic group was finally relocated to Bad Warmbrunn in Silesia. In 1945 she moved to Göttingen.

After some of the scattered employees and departments of the Reichsanstalt in Braunschweig had been brought together again, an ad hoc "Presidential Committee" with members such as Werner Heisenberg , Hans Kopfermann and Robert Wichard Pohl under the direction of Max von Laues Grützmacher temporarily appointed head of the Braunschweig office in 1947 . After founding the PTB, he headed the acoustics department until his retirement in 1966. In addition, he had held an honorary professorship at the Technical University of Braunschweig since 1948 .

Grützmacher was treasurer of the Association of German Physical Societies (VDPG). With Erwin Meyer he was editor of the acoustic magazine in the 1930s and 1940s.
