Life

From 1852 he studied medicine and the last two years mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden with Frederik Kaiser . In 1857 he received his doctorate with the thesis De Kometen van de jaren 1556, 1264 en 975, en hare avoidende identiteit . Donati's Comet was expected again between 1856 and 1860 . In 1859 he became associate professor of astronomy at the University of Utrecht and director of the Royal Sonnenborgh Observatory .

With Anthonid Cornelis Oudemans he wrote Recherches de la quantite d'ether contenue dans les liquides (1864) and Sur les contractions dans les mélanges de liquides .

In 1868 he carried out an improved version of the Fizeau experiment .
