biography

Martin Kolbe grew up in Tailfingen , Rutesheim and Waiblingen as the son of a pastor. He taught himself to play the guitar and the drums . From 1970 to 1975 he played as a drummer in local rock and blues bands. From 1973 he made appearances as a soloist on the acoustic guitar , in 1974 the first LP was released.

1977 began his collaboration with Ralf Illenberger as Duo Kolbe & Illenberger . The first joint LP Waves was released in 1978, reached a place in the top ten of the SDR's annual top list and was used by Stereo magazine for a long time as a reference record for acoustic guitar music. The duo played around 1,000 concerts in around 40 countries and released seven albums. In addition to the concerts, they had numerous live appearances on radio and television, including in the ZDF broadcast Aspects and in the ARD Rockpalast .

The duo was nominated for the German Record Award and worked as a studio musician in various productions.

In 1987 Martin Kolbe separated from Ralf Illenberger and moved to Zurich , where he lives today.

Martin Kolbe has been suffering from bipolar disorder since 1979 , which ultimately justifies his temporary withdrawal from public work as a musician. Since 2008 he has been involved in the DGBS ( German Society for Bipolar Disorders eV) and in September 2011 was elected first deputy chairman and representative of this society. He made several public statements about his illness, for example in SWR1 People (2010) and in an interview with Akustik Guitar magazine (2011). At the beginning of 2018 he resigned from the position of deputy chairman.

In 2012, Martin Kolbe appeared again in public for the first time in a long time, as part of the 12th annual DGBS conference in Hanover. Another concert followed in Zurich in October 2013, where he presented his songs, which deal with his experiences in and with psychiatry and the people he met there.

In spring 2014 he recorded the CD Songs from the Inside . In his English-language songs, he addresses his experiences with the disease and psychiatry. In May 2014 Kolbe went on tour through Germany with the "Bipolar Roadshow" he initiated, where he was accompanied by guitarists Peter Autschbach and Ralf Illenberger on his new songs . On this occasion, the duo Kolbe & Illenberger stood together on the same stage for the first time in 28 years.

In 2017, the duo released the double CD Essentials with the studio works that they consider to be the most essential.
