Martin Löschmann

Martin Löschmann (born February 20, 1935 in Bernsdorf , Bütow district , Hinterpommern ) is a German specialist in German, English, philologist and teacher / didactic German as a foreign language and German as a second language.

One year after studying German studies (state examination with Hans Mayer ) and English studies at the University of Leipzig (1955–1960), Martin Löschmann began teaching in 1961 at the Herder Institute at Leipzig University. At this institute, foreign students were prepared for studying in the GDR up to the turn of the century.

The practical teaching activity was accompanied by a scientific foundation for teaching German as a Foreign Language (DaF), in which Löschmann actively participated. His collaboration culminated, on the one hand, in his doctorate on the topic of the development of direct comprehension (immedial) reading in German lessons for foreigners. A contribution to the target conception, text and exercise design of a modern reading lesson in a foreign language (1969) and on the other hand in the transfer to the research department founded in the same year. With the dissertation that gave him the Dr. phil. and the accompanying publications made a decisive contribution to the scientific establishment and foundation of teaching German as a foreign language, as the development of foreign language reading skills at the Herder Institute could be promoted to improve performance. The well-founded division of reading forms / types of reading (orienting, cursory, total reading) was adopted at the time in East and West. With his work Löschmann made a decisive contribution to enforcing the communicative orientation of GFL lessons.

Ten years later, Löschmann completed his habilitation on the subject of theory and practice of work on vocabulary at the level of the training and further education of foreign German teachers and thus contributed to the foundation of the further and further training of foreign German teachers. His habilitation thesis, which led to the Dr. sc. paed. led (after the reunification officially converted into a Dr. paed. habil.), established the integrative principle of vocabulary work in both DaF and DaZ lessons. The results of his research in the 1970s and 1980s were presented in the monograph Efficient Vocabulary Work. Old and new ways combined.

After earning his spurs as an assistant, senior assistant and lecturer at the Herder Institute, he was appointed professor for German as a foreign language in 1984.

His research and development work extended beyond the two main areas of reading and vocabulary to technical language teaching (especially the technical language of architects), motivation, stereotypes in foreign language teaching, regional studies, intercultural learning. His teaching, research and development work, his involvement in the internationally known magazine German as a Foreign Language , published by the Herder Institute, in scientific committees and, last but not least, his continuing education and training obligations led him, even after the reunification, through the SES and DAAD , to different countries, including Algeria, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Great Britain, Yugoslavia, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, Austria, Poland, Soviet Union / Russia, Switzerland, USA, Czech Republic.

Martin Löschmann is the author and editor of numerous publications, teaching and learning materials for the areas of German as a foreign language, German as a second language, applied linguistics and regional studies . Board activity

In 2017, the IIK eV Berlin split from the association of the IIK with the managing director Gerhard Wazel , and Löschmann was elected to the board of the registered association. The independent institute rests on two pillars: running integration courses for refugees and migrants (on behalf of the BAMF ) including alpha courses on the one hand and further training of teachers in these DaF and DaZ courses on the other. Great attention is paid to job-oriented language teaching, with Löschmann having returned to one of his research and development focuses, namely technical language teaching in the broadest sense.
