Martin Langer (born March 9, 1956 in Göttingen ) is a German photographer .

Career

After completing school and military service, Langer first completed an apprenticeship as a radio and television technician before studying visual communication with a focus on photojournalism . During his time at university he was made aware of the subject area of ​​photo satire by the well-known Berlin artist and political graphic designer Ernst Volland and from then on he was encouraged and encouraged by his professors Heinemann and Boström . The result is Curious and Merciless. Photo satire today , a standard work on the subject.

Since 1984, Langer has also worked as a photographer on political and social issues for magazines, publishers and organizations such as Robin Wood and Greenpeace . In 1995 he received the Fuji Euro Press Photo Award for his photo documentation about the taking of the Brent Spar oil platform by the environmental organization Greenpeace.

Of his social-documentary reports, the black-and-white series about the riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen in August 1992, photographed on behalf of Spiegel , received the most attention. The best-known picture of the report showed the unemployed Harald Ewert , dressed in the jersey of the German national soccer team with black, red and gold applications and an allegedly urine-stained sweatpants , who raised his right hand in the Hitler salute. Photography is a symbol of the "ugly German" and is one of the icons of post-war photography in Germany. It has been published hundreds of times and is in collections of u. a. the House of History in Bonn and the German Historical Museum in Berlin.

Langer is a member of FreeLens , an association of photo journalists. He received numerous prizes and awards for his satirical and funny pictures of everyday life.
