Martin Ludwig Hansal

Martin Ludwig Hansal (born October 27, 1823 Groß-Tajax , Moravia ; † January 26, 1885 in Khartoum , Sudan ) was an Austrian traveler to Africa and consul.

Hansal initially worked in Vienna as a secondary school teacher. In 1853 he went to the Catholic mission in Khartoum as Ignaz Knoblecher's secretary and in 1857 became a teacher at the mission school in Gondokoro . In 1857 he returned to Vienna and in 1861 joined Theodor von Heuglin's expedition to the upper Nile region, but soon had to return to Khartoum for health reasons. In 1871 he became honorary consul in Khartoum and Austrian vice consul. In 1874 he reached Lado with Ernst Marno . In 1885 he was killed during the Mahdi uprising .
