Martin Marietta Corporation was an American conglomerate primarily active in the aerospace and defense sectors and existed from 1961 to 1995.
Company history
The Martin Marietta Corporation was created in 1961 through the merger of the aviation and defense company Glenn L. Martin Company with the building materials group American-Marietta Corporation (paints, building materials). The company was active in various sectors with various subsidiaries (e.g. Martin Marietta Materials, Martin Marietta Aluminum) and produced, among other things, aircraft and aircraft parts, engines, electronics, building materials and cement as well as chemicals. She took part in the boom in the aerospace industry triggered by the space race and arms race with the Soviet Union. The Glenn L. Martin Company had already gained experience in the construction of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles ( Matador , Mace , Viking , Vanguard project ). The Group's best-known products include the Titan intercontinental and launch vehicle and the Pershing medium-range missile, which Martin was still developing in the 1950s.
1982 threatened a hostile takeover by the Bendix Corporation . To prevent this, Martin Marietta sold all areas that were not part of the core business areas in order to finance a hostile takeover of Bendix. Martin Marietta survived this takeover battle and remained an independent company, while Bendix was taken over by the Allied Corporation . In 1993 the aerospace and satellite division of General Electric and the space division of General Dynamics were taken over . In 1995 it merged with the Lockheed Corporation to form Lockheed Martin . In 1996 Lockheed Martin parted with the last shares in the Martin Marietta Materials division , which was floated on the stock exchange in 1994.
