Martin (o) Meulenberg SMM (born October 30, 1872 in Hillensberg , Heinsberg district , Germany ; † August 3, 1941 ) was a German Roman Catholic bishop in Iceland . He was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in Iceland after the Reformation .

Life

Meulenberg, a born Rhinelander, was a member of the Catholic priestly community of the Montfortaner . Pope Pius XI appointed him on June 12, 1923 as the first prefect of the newly established Apostolic Prefecture of Iceland and in 1929 after its renaming as the first Vicar Apostolic of Iceland.

Pius XI. appointed him titular bishop of Lunda and immediately afterwards titular bishop of Hólar . He was ordained bishop on July 25, 1929, by Wilhelmus Marinus Cardinal van Rossum , Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . Co-consecrators were Josef Ludwig Brems , Titular Bishop of Roskilde and Apostolic Vicar of Denmark , and Johann Evangelist Erich Müller , Titular Bishop of Lorea and Apostolic Vicar of Sweden .
