Martin Rheinheimer (* 1960 in Reinbek near Hamburg) is a German historian in Denmark .

In 1989 he received his Dr. phil., in 1998 he completed his habilitation at the University of Kiel . Originally a medieval historian, around 1990 he turned to the social and economic history of the early modern period, with the former Duchy of Schleswig and neighboring areas in Holstein , Jutland and Funen forming the geographical framework. In his research he combines qualitative and quantitative methods. In recent years he has mostly dealt with the economic and social history of the cross-border Wadden Sea region and has written five monographs that start from the micro-historical point of view on the island of Amrum . After three biographical works on the former slave and general in Algeria Hark Olufs (2001), the former slave and later slave trader Hark Nickelsen (2010) and the bunk man Cornelius Peters (2007), a large-scale structural history of the maritime society on Amrum appeared in 2016 on the basis of serial sources the peculiarities and networks of a seafaring society are represented. As a preliminary work, he published the gender series on the island of Amrum in 2010 . Now he has turned to the Halligen and has already published a book about the world of a seafaring couple.

Martin Rheinheimer has been a professor at the Syddansk Universitet in Esbjerg (Denmark) since 1999, where he has held the chair for maritime and regional history since 2007, and in 2013 he was transferred from there to the campus in Odense . From 2006 to 2013 he was also director of the Center for Maritime og Regionale Studier , a research collaboration between Syddansk Universitet and Fiskeri- og Søfartsmuseet in Esbjerg. Since 2016 he has been the full-time director of the Institute for History at the Syddansk Universitet.

Martin Rheinheimer was active as secretary (1992–2000), spokesman for the editorial team (since 2004) and deputy spokesman (since 2008) for the Working Group for Economic and Social History in Schleswig-Holstein . For the working group he edited the "Bibliography on the Economic and Social History of Schleswig-Holstein" (published 1997) and edited several anthologies: Subjective Worlds (1998), The Passage through the World (2001), Written Form and Identity (2004), Borders in the history of Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark (2006) as well as humans and the sea in the history of Schleswig-Holstein and southern Denmark (2010), from the middle of the country (with Detlev Kraack, 2013).
