Martin Strolz (born February 16, 1932 in Lech , Vorarlberg ; † August 4, 1994 there ) was an Austrian ski racer . He won numerous international races in the 1950s and was runner-up in the downhill world champion in 1954 .

Career

Due to the war, Strolz only began skiing at the age of 14. He showed great talent right from the start, becoming Austrian junior champion in combination in 1950 and in giant slalom and downhill in 1951. In the winter of 1952, Strolz won the giant slaloms in Davos , St. Anton and Innsbruck as well as the downhill runs in Tschagguns and the Parsenn derby . In the next year, the Vorarlberg man took several podium places, including in the downhill and combined from Wengen , and towards the end of the season he won the slalom, the downhill and the combined in Åre .

In the winter of 1954 Strolz won the Zürser See giant slalom, came back on the podium in Wengen (2nd place with No. 19!) And combination (3rd place) as well as 3rd place in the combination at the Montafon race from Schruns and the descent in Oppdal . He celebrated his greatest success at the 1954 World Cup in Åre, Sweden. Behind Christian Pravda and in front of Ernst Oberaigner , he won the silver medal in the downhill.

In the summer of 1954, Strolz went to the USA , where he worked as a ski instructor, but continued to take part in races. At the US championships in 1955 in Stowe and the Harriman Cup in Sun Valley , he won the downhill. The next winter he returned to Europe, but did not achieve any top positions and was therefore (after resigning; Othmar Schneider came to the train instead ) at the Olympic Winter Games as a substitute and subsequently as a forerunner at the start. After the games he went back to the USA and drove more races there. In 1957 he reached his last podium in a slalom in Québec , but he could no longer keep up with the world's best. Therefore, he did not start in Europe the next winter, as a qualification for the world championship appeared hopeless, and he ended his career.

In the early 1960s, Strolz returned to Lech. As a trained orthopedic shoemaker , he took over his father's ski boot manufacture and expanded it. The company was an outfitter for the Austrian and other national teams for several decades.
