Martin Thorsen Schmidt (born March 13, 1806 or 1807 in Flensburg , † July 31, 1883 in Wandsbek ) was a businessman and German politician.

Life

Schmidt was a wealthy businessman in Kiel . He took his citizenship oath there on October 9, 1835. From August 31, 1841 he was a member of the XXXII college of the city. He was a citizen armament captain and British consul .

After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising against Denmark, Schmidt led the democratic evening meeting on March 23, 1848 in Kiel. On March 24, 1848, he was appointed to the Provisional Government , where he was responsible for trade, customs and postal services. After the Treaty of Malmö of August 26, 1848 on an armistice, the entire Provisional Government resigned on October 22, 1848.

On July 10, 1850, Schmidt was elected to the Schleswig-Holstein state assembly in the census election of the city of Kiel . On October 20, 1850, he was elected as city councilor for the city of Kiel.

After the survey finally ended, he had to leave Kiel, which had become Danish again, as he was not granted amnesty . He worked as a businessman in Hamburg . There he went bankrupt in 1870 through no fault of his own.

On May 1, 1851, Schmidt founded the MT Schmidt company in Hamburg, which existed until his death. In addition, he established together with his son Johs. Asmus Schmidt founded the company MT Schmidt & Sohn on January 1, 1871, which continued to exist after his death. Schmidt was a member of the Hamburg Parliament from 1859 to 1865 .
