Martin Verstappen (born August 7, 1773 in Antwerp , † January 17, 1853 in Rome ) was a Belgian landscape painter and lithographer .

life and work

Martin Verstappen received his training from Petrus van Regemorter and Hendrik Aarnout Myin at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp . He stayed temporarily in Dresden , Frankfurt am Main and Aschaffenburg and lived in Rome from 1804. He was a member of the Accademia di San Luca . In 1810 he received a gold medal in Paris. He was a knight of the Leopold Order . His tomb is in the Church of San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in Rome.

Verstappen painted ideal Italian landscapes, mostly with the sun setting.

Michelangelo Pacetti and Massimo d'Azeglio are among his students .
