Martin Winter ( Chinese  維馬丁 ; Pinyin : Wei Mading; * 1966 in Vienna ) is an Austrian translator , sinologist and poet . He translated the biography of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo and received the translation award from the Federal Chancellery in 2016 for crossing the Yellow River .

Life

After studying German and Sinology, Winter lived in China and Taiwan for 15 years . From 1988 to 1990 he was on a scholarship in Taiwan. He has been working as a translator since an internship in Shanghai (1992/1993). In 1994 he gave German lessons for refugees in civil service . He taught German and English and worked as a lecturer for German language and Austrian literature at several universities ( Wuhan , Chongqing , Beijing , Taiwan and Romania). From 1999 to 2009, Winter worked as a translator in Beijing. He took part in the Poetry International Festival Rotterdam.

Winter now lives with his family in Vienna. He publishes articles on contemporary Chinese literature and translates works from Chinese. He is the editor of the magazine LEUCHTSPUR: New Chinese Literature and writes poetry in German, English and Chinese.

Winter's articles and poems have appeared in The New York Review of Books and in Chinese, German and Swiss daily and weekly newspapers.
