The Martinella are a plant genus that the family of Bignoniaceae belongs (Bignoniaceae). The three associated species are native to the tropical regions of America.

description

Martinella species are lianas , the stem axes of which show a phloem divided into four in cross section . The twigs are hairless and twisting, there are no glands between the attachment points of the opposite leaves , but a groove is formed there. The leaves are divided in two, often a third leaf is transformed into a tendril . Pseudo stipules are not formed.

The inflorescences are axillary racemes . The calyx is very long with more than 11 cm, it is tubular to bell-shaped, two-lobed to irregularly three- to four-lobed, membranous and not covered with glands. The crown is dark wine red, tubular to bell-shaped, straight and membranous. The four stamens do not protrude beyond the crown, the anthers are hairless, their counters straight. The ovary is linear-cylindrical, sparsely covered with fine scales and contains four (rarely only two or three) rows of ovules per ovary compartment . The ovary stands on a cup-shaped flower base .

The fruits are linear, strongly flattened capsules . These lignify and are smooth and have some cork pores. The seeds are hairless and have two wings.

distribution

The species of the genus Martinella occur from southern Mexico to Brazil and Bolivia .

Systematics

Two types are distinguished within the genus:

  • Martinella insignis A.H. Gentry ex Zuntini & LGLohmann : The species first described in 2014 occurs in the Brazilian states of Bahia and Espirito Santo.
  • Martinella iquitosensis A.Samp. : The homeland is Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and northern Brazil.
  • Martinella obovata (Kunth) Bureau & K.Schum. : The range extends from southern Mexico to Trinidad and tropical South America. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.
