Mary F. Wheeler

Mary Fanett Wheeler (born December 28, 1938 in Cuero , Texas ) is an American mathematician.

Life

Wheeler first studied pharmacy and then wanted to become a lawyer, but switched to mathematics at the University of Texas and made her bachelor's degree in social sciences and mathematics in 1960. In 1963 she received her master’s degree and in 1971 she did her PhD at Rice University with Henry Rachford ( A priori error estimates for Galerkin approximations to parabolic partial differential equations ), whereby she had started a family and was mother to a daughter. After receiving her doctorate, she taught at Rice University, where she became Noah Harding Professor for Computational and applied Mathematics in 1988 . She was also a visiting professor at the University of Houston .

She has been a professor at the University of Texas at Austin since 1995 .

Wheeler is concerned with numerical algorithms for partial differential equations , which she also applies, for example, in questions of geotechnical and environmental engineering and the oil industry. She researches the modeling of rivers in porous media in order to improve methods for oil extraction or to simulate the spread of pollutants in groundwater. Her husband was an engineer at Exxon and with this she was involved in restoration projects in the Chesapeake Bay , Delaware Bay and Florida. She has published over 200 papers and is co-editor of seven books. She was co-editor of several SIAM magazines and has been active on SIAM committees.

In 1989 she was a Noether Lecturer . In 2010 she was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( Role of computational science in protecting the environment: Geological storage of CO2 ). In 2009 she received the Theodore von Kármán Prize . In 2010 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
