Mary Gilmore (1927)

Dame Mary Gilmore , DBE (born August 16, 1865 in Goulburn , New South Wales , † December 3, 1962 in Sydney ) was an Australian writer.

Life

Mary Gilmore was born Mary Jean Cameron to Donald Cameron and his wife Mary Ann. Because her family moved frequently, she was trained at various schools. She started working as a teacher. Around 1890 she met Henry Lawson , who was influenced by her in his literary work. In 1896 she emigrated to the Cosme colony in Paraguay . There she met William Alexander Gilmore (1866-1945), whom she married on May 25, 1897. Their only son, William Dysart Cameron Gilmore (1898–1945) was born on August 21, 1898. In 1899 the Gilmores abandoned the colony plans and returned to Australia after a stay in London, where they stayed with Henry Lawson. In 1908, Mary Gilmore began working with the Australian Worker newspaper . She became editor of the Women's Page ; she held this position for 23 years until February 11, 1931. Between 1932 and 1954 she published several well-known volumes of poetry and was committed to many social and economic reforms. From 1952 to mid-1962 she wrote the Arrows column for the communist newspaper Tribune . After her death, she received a state funeral.

Awards and honors

On February 1, 1937, she was named Dame Commander , the second highest rank of the Order of the British Empire .

Since 1985 the Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASA) has presented the Mary Gilmore Award for the first volume of poetry by an author.

Gilmore's portrait and excerpts from her texts have been featured on the Australian 10 dollar bill since 1993 .
