Mary Miles Minter
Mary Miles Minter (born April 25, 1902 in Shreveport , Louisiana as Juliet Reilly , † August 4, 1984 in Santa Monica ) was an American silent film actress .
Life
Minter was born in 1902 as the youngest of two daughters to Broadway actress Charlotte Shelby . The mother pushed Juliet and her sister Margaret into an acting career. At the age of five, Minter played her first small role on Broadway. In 1915 she got her first leading role in The Fairy and the Waif . On the screen she was mostly seen as a loving and kind-hearted young girl. In 1919 she met director William Desmond Taylor while filming Anne of Green Gables and began a relationship with the 30-year-old man.
His relationship with Taylor came into the limelight when he was shot dead in his Hollywood home on February 1, 1922. One of the suspects in this still unsolved murder case was Minters' mother, Charlotte Shelby. The details of the relationship published in the course of the Taylor murder case - including illustrious love letters - severely damaged the image of Mary Miles Minter, who was previously known for her roles as a good young girl. After the scandal, she could no longer build on her previous successes. Minter made over 50 silent films, and she last appeared in front of the camera in 1923 in The Trail of the Lonesome Pine . Paramount Pictures did not subsequently renew their contract.
The actress died in 1984 in a wealthy family after a stroke in Santa Monica. Mary Miles Minter has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1724 Vine Street).
