Masanao Ozawa ( Japanese 小澤 正直 , Ozawa Masanao ; * 1950 ) is a Japanese mathematician and physicist from Nagoya University . He gained international attention through his work on Heisenberg's uncertainty principle .

Life

Ozawa received his doctorate from Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku and is now a professor at the Graduate School of Computer Science at Nagoya University. Before that he was a professor in Nagoya and at Tōhoku University . He is particularly concerned with quantum information theory , the measurement process in quantum mechanics and open quantum systems.

Ozawa inequality

Ozawa stated in 2003 that Werner Heisenberg's interpretation of the uncertainty principle, often presented in lectures, as mutual interference in measurements, was not entirely correct. Ozawa analyzed with the eponymous inequality, the different shares in the uncertainty principle: ,

Where:

  • the uncertainty of the location: the mean deviation between the location before the interaction in the measuring device and the value that is subsequently displayed (measurement noise ),
  • the indeterminacy of the impulse: the mean change in the impulse during the time evolution in the measuring apparatus,
  • the quantum fluctuation of momentum,
  • the quantum fluctuation of the place and
  • the Planck's constant (with , whereby the right side of the above inequality to be).

The uncertainty principle remains valid as a fundamental component of quantum mechanics , but the portion that can be traced back to disturbances through measurements can be pushed below the limit of the uncertainty principle .

Experimental evidence

His theory was in 2012 in a group at the Atomic Institute of the Technical University of Vienna to Yuji Hasegawa experiments with neutron spins and attempts by a team of University of Toronto to Aephraim Steinberg with polarized photons are confirmed.

Awards

Ozawa received the Fall Prize of the Japanese Mathematical Society in 2008 and the International Quantum Communication Award in 2010 .
