Kawasaki Masaru

Kawasaki Masaru ( Japanese 川 崎 優 ; born April 19, 1924 in Hiroshima , Japan ; † November 29, 2018 in Tokyo , Japan) was a Japanese composer and conductor .

Life

He completed his studies at the Tokyo Academy of Music , from which he graduated in 1949. In 1965 and 1966 he had the opportunity to complete his composition studies with Vincent Persichetti and Václav Nelhýbel at the Juilliard School of Music in New York .

He was Professor of Composition , Music Theory and Flute at Tokoha Gakuen University , Lecturer in Flute and Woodwind Ensemble at Tokyo University of Fine Arts, and was director of the Tokyo Symphonic Band . He was also a member of the Presidium of the Association of Japanese Wind Music Conductors . Most recently he concentrated on composing, although he felt obliged to conduct and music director of the flute choirs "Musica Fiore" and "Musica Rosa".

Furthermore, in 1979 he was musical director of the first "International Youth Musicale" in Shizuoka , Japan and continued to commit himself to this task until the 6th Festival in 1994. In 1971, he performed his own works at the International Festival of Music in Uster , Switzerland , 1974, 1977 and 1981 each invited as a conductor. As a member of the jury of many international music competitions, he was very sought-after and valuable.

He wrote operas , solo and ensemble works as well as various outstanding and trend-setting works for wind orchestra . He wrote a book on carefully setting up arrangements for wind orchestras. He continued to write articles in the Japanese trade magazines for wind bands.

He died at the age of 94 on November 29, 2018.
