Massum Faryar

Massum Faryar (* 1959 in Herat , Afghanistan ) is an Afghan German-speaking author and translator.

Life

Massum Faryar passed his A-levels in Afghanistan and came to Germany in 1982, where he studied German in Munich . He lives in Berlin, where he works as a translator and author. In 2005 Faryar received his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with the thesis Window on Contemporary History: a monographic study on Ota Filip and his work .

At the international short story competition of the city of Mannheim and the Andiamo publishing house border. Crossing , migration and Europe, he received a special award from the KulturQuer-QuerKultur association for his contribution Der Rucksack 2008 . The jury praised his story as oppressively topical, narrative versed and exciting and at the same time informative for a broad readership .

His novel Buskaschi - or My Mother's Carpet was published in 2015 by Kiepenheuer & Witsch (and as an audio book by Random House Audio ). A whole page was devoted to the work before it was published in the spring edition of the English-language magazine New Books in German .

The author has received several grants for his literary work, e. B. the Alfred Döblin scholarship , a scholarship of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research , the scholarship Dresden city clerks . In 2017 the author was a scholarship holder of the German Academy Rome Villa Massimo .

Massum Faryar on his literary career:

“I discovered my love for literature and poetry as a child. During my school days I published both poems and short stories in the literary magazine Herat and in the Herat daily newspaper. In the 80s and 90s I wrote in Persian and published it in the Afghan exile papers. Above all, there were poems, political essays, literary critical texts, translations of German short stories and scripts. So for me it is a matter of changing the language from Dari to German, and not of a new literary beginning, as was sometimes written. One thing is true, however: Buzkashi is my first novel that I write. "
