Matei Vișniec
Matei Vișniec (born January 29, 1956 in Rădăuți , Romania ) is a Romanian-French author and journalist .
Life
Matei Vişniec was born in 1956 as the son of an accountant and a teacher in Rădăuți. From 1976 to 1980 he studied history and philosophy at the University of Bucharest , after which he worked as a history teacher. In 1977 he began writing poetry and plays. During a stay in France in 1987 he applied for political asylum. From 1988 to 1989 Vișniec worked in London as broadcast editor for the BBC . He then settled in Paris and wrote his dissertation on cultural resistance against the communist regimes of Eastern Europe at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales . In 1993 he received French citizenship. In addition to his literary work, Vișniec works for the French international broadcaster RFI .
Literary work
In 1972 Matei Vișniec made his national debut with poems in the literary magazine Luceafărul . Between 1980 and 1987 he published three volumes of poetry and was a co-founder of the literary circle on Monday (Cenaclului de Luni). In 1984 he became a member of the Romanian Writers' Union USR (Uniunea Scriitorilor din România). For his third volume of poetry Înţeleptul la ora de ceai he received the USR Prize in 1985. His plays and scripts, written between 1977 and 1987, however, were not approved for performance or publication by the cultural authorities of the Socialist Republic of Romania . In his work Vișniec clearly distinguished himself from Socialist Realism and, influenced by Surrealism , Dadaism , absurd theater and magical realism , turned to postmodernism . Since he moved to France, Vișniec has mainly written in French. His often tragicomic pieces have so far been translated into more than 30 languages, regularly performed at international festivals and received numerous prizes. In Romania he has been one of the most played playwrights since the political upheaval in 1989 . In 1996 the National Theater and Opera House Timișoara organized a Matei Vișniec Festival . In the German-speaking countries Vișniec became known in 2002 with the play The story of communism retold for the mentally ill . In 2014 he received an honorary doctorate from Ovidius University, Constanța, for his literary work .
