Athletic career

Until 1971 Mathias Grüner played in the company sports community (BSG) Empor Lobenstein, where he was most recently part of the junior team . At the beginning of the 1971/72 season he was delegated by the BSG Empor to the regional football focus, the FC Carl Zeiss Jena. After Grüner had already come to the end of the 1973/74 season in the second-rate GDR league team FCC II , he was officially included in the squad of the 2nd team for the 1974/75 season. Mainly used as a Libero , Grüner played 17 out of a total of 22 GDR league games. 1975/76 he was with the FCC II relay winner in the GDR league and was involved with 20 missions as a left defender. Since the second teams from the GDR league had been banned from the 1976/77 season, Mathias Grüner was included in the squad of the top division team. In the league, however, he was only used in two games. For the first time he came on the 7th match day in the match 1. FC Union Berlin - FCC (2: 1) for 90 minutes in his previous position as a right-back. On the 19th matchday he was substituted on in the away game at 1. FC Magdeburg at the 2nd half for Dieter Noack , to whom he had lost his regular place. Mainly Grüner played for the FCC in the junior league , where he was called up in 17 point games in different defensive positions.

In the 1977/78 season Grüner played for the league promoted BSG Wismut Gera . By April 1978 he had eight missions in which he played as usual in defense. In May 1978 he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . After his release, Grüner returned to his hometown and played again for the BSG Empor Lobenstein, which at that time was represented in the fourth-class district class Gera. With Grüner's participation, the Lobensteiners were promoted to the district league, where the team, now running as BSG Electronics, was led by Grüner to fourth place. In 1988 Mathias Gruner, until then still active in the district league with BSG Elektronik, had to end his career as an active soccer player for health reasons.
