Mathilde Saïman

Mathilde Alice Saïman ( December 9, 1891 in Algiers - September 1940 in Paris ) was a French opera singer who was active in soprano and mezzo-soprano roles at the Opéra-Comique during the first half of the 20th century .

Life

Saïman was born in Algiers into a French family and was a student at the Paris Conservatory where she received her first prize for her singing. She made her debut on March 21, 1914 at the Opéra-Comique in the opera Louise by Gustave Charpentier as Grisette . A month later she appeared there in her first leading role as Jeanne in La vivandière by Benjamin Godard . She also sang the role of Pierre in the world premiere of Leroux's Les cadeaux de Noël (1915) and of Lélia in the French premiere of André Messager's Béatrice (1917). Her other roles at the Opéra-Comique included the resumption of Madame Butterfly (Kate Pinkerton and Cio-Cio San), Cavalleria rusticana (Lola and Santuzza), Les Contes d'Hoffmann (Giulietta and Antonia) and La Bohème (Musetta).

In her memoirs, Pierre-Barthélemy Gheusi , one of the directors at the Opéra-Comique, described her as a “lively performer” whose voice had a “light timbre”. Saïman was hired in 1916 for several sound recordings for Pathé Records . She died in Paris at the age of 48.
