Matsuo Sugano ( Japanese 菅 野 松 男 , Sugano Matsuo ; * 1939 ) is a Japanese astronomer . During his long-term employees at the Municipal Planetarium (Akashi Municipal Planetarium) in Akashi he tried especially to the promotion of amateur astronomy in Japan.

Sugano is the co-discoverer of several asteroids . He also discovered three Novae : V827 Her with Minoru Honda , V838 Her with George Eric Deacon Alcock and V4327 Sgr with William Liller and the variable star V1143 Ori .

In 1983 he was the first to observe the non-periodic comet C / 1983 J1 (Sugano-Saigusa-Fujikawa) .

The asteroid (5872) Sugano was named after him, (6155) Yokosugano after his wife Yoko.
