Ryan began his career in 2001 on the team at Niagara University , with whom he played in the US college league College Hockey America . The right-shooter did not finish his studies and instead moved to the Guelph Storm in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League during the 2002/03 season . In his second season in Guelph , he won the J. Ross Robertson Cup , the championship of the OHL, with the Storm . Ryan was used in 90 games and was able to achieve 96 points scorer. The trained striker performed well and was able to improve continuously. Finally, he got the chance to prove himself in the NHL with the Kings during the 2005/06 season . Ryan appeared in 12 games and scored an assist . As a result, he was back in the ranks of the monarchs.

After he finally figured out hardly any chances of a permanent engagement in the NHL, he forced a move to Europe in the summer of 2008. There those responsible for the Augsburg panthers became aware of the then 25-year-old and provided him with a contract. Matt Ryan played accordingly in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons for the Panthers Ice Hockey. For the 2010/11 season Ryan signed a contract with Villacher SV .
