The Mattawishkwia River is an approximately 180 km long left tributary of the Missinaibi River in the north of the Canadian province of Ontario .

The Mattawishkwia River has its source on the Canadian Shield northeast of Little Kalsas Lake in the north of the Algoma District . The headwaters are 55 km south-southwest of Hearst at an altitude of about 335  m . The Mattawitchewan River flows a few kilometers southeast of the headwaters of the Mattawishkwia River to the northeast. The Mattawishkwia River initially flows through the two lakes Little Kalsas Lake and Kalsas Lake in a westerly direction. Then he turns north. It flows 60 km in a predominantly northerly direction. The Algoma Central Railway and Ontario Highway 583 cross the river south of Mead . The Kabinakagami River runs a few kilometers to the west, also in a northerly direction. The Mattawishkwia River is now turning east-northeast. To the west of Hearst, the Algoma Central Railway crosses the river again. 63 km above the mouth of the Mattawishkwia River flows along the southern outskirts of Hearst. At the eastern end of Hearst, the Ontario Highway 11 and the Canadian Pacific Railway cross the river. In the lower reaches of the Mattawishkwia River flows north past the two lakes Mattawishkwia Lake and East Mattawishkwia Lake , before finally flowing into the left arm of the Missinaibi River 40 km northeast of Hearst at the level of the Alice Island .

The Mattawishkwia River drains an area of ​​about 1870 km². The mean discharge at Hearst is 13.8 m³ / s. In April and May, when the snowmelts, the river usually carries the largest amounts of water.
