Matteo Boniciolli (born April 18, 1962 in Trieste ) is an Italian basketball coach . He is currently the coach of the Kazakh club BK Astana , which plays in the VTB United League .

Career

His first position as head coach was in 1999 Snaidero Udine in the Italian A2 series. With Udine he rose to Serie A2 in the first season. In his promotion season he immediately reached the play-offs and reached the semifinals there. He then moved to Fortitudo Bologna and reached in the 2001/02 season the final of the Italian championship, which was lost to Benetton Treviso. After a bad start to the 2002/03 season, he was released in Bologna. After a mid-season in Belgium, where he finished in the top four with Ostend, he returned to Italy at the beginning of the 2005/06 season. With Air Avellino, he won his first title in 2008 with the Italian Cup. In the same year he was voted the best Italian Serie A coach. In the next season he moved to Virtus Bologna and won the Eurochallenge 2008/2009 with his team. After this success he moved to Virtus Roma, with whom he took part in the Euroleague, among other things. After his contract ended in 2011, he signed with the Kazakh flagship club BK Astana. With his Kazakh club, he won the cup three times in a row from 2011 to 2013, the championship in 2012 and 2013 and reached the play-off quarter-finals in the VTB United League in the 2012/13 season . In May 2013 it was announced that Boniciolli would train alongside Astana for the Kazakh national team.
