Live and act
Matthäus Arnold Wilckens was a son of the archivist Nicolaus Wilckens , who was married to Susanna Maria Trainer, widowed Ester. In Hamburg he attended the academic high school . After matriculating on April 26, 1725 at the University of Leipzig , he studied law. After receiving his doctorate in 1737, he returned to Hamburg, where he did not work as a lawyer. On June 6, 1741, he married Margaretha Catharina vom Kampe (1715–1767).
Wilckens was very interested in literature. He built an important library that was auctioned off after his death. A printed auction catalog was published for this in 1761. Wilckens was regarded as a lively participant in social life in Hamburg. He regularly attended the societies of the doctor Peter Carpsers, which took place on Fridays. He had been friends with Friedrich von Hagedorn since school days and was his only correspondent who referred to him during his lifetime. Together they published the extract of earthly pleasure in God of their friend Barthold Heinrich Brockes . Documents in the Hamburg State and University Library show that Wilckens also had correspondence with Johann Bernhard Basedow , Nikolaus Dietrich Giseke , Georg Philipp Telemann and Daniel Wilhelm Triller .
As a poet Wilckens participated in parts three to six of the poetry of the Lower Saxony by Christian Friedrich Weichmann . For this work he wrote many praise, marriage and funeral poems and epigrams and translated existing ancient or French prose. Georg Philipp Telemann valued Wilckens as a poet for his own sacred music.
