Christian Friedrich Weichmann (born August 24, 1698 in Harburg , † August 4, 1770 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German lawyer, publicist and poet.

Live and act

Christian Friedrich Weichmann studied law and philology in Halle. In the early 1720s he went to Hamburg, where he became friends with Barthold Heinrich Brockes and other poets and became a member of the first Hamburg Patriotic Society. From 1722 to 1725 he was editor of the learned news and from 1724 to 1728 editor of the magazine Der Patriot . In 1728, following a trip to England, he entered the service of Duke Ludwig Rudolf . After a short time in Blankenburg, he was sent to Wolfenbüttel in the early 1730s. Here he worked initially as a secret secretary, then from 1734 as a councilor and later as a secret councilor. From 1737 onwards he was also consistorial advisor.

At a young age, Weichmann made a name for himself as the editor of the important collection of poems, Poetry of the Lower Saxony . He himself was editor and co-author of the first three volumes, which appeared in 1721, 1723 and 1726. The last three volumes were edited by Johann Peter Kohl . The collection contains numerous previously unpublished poems by North German poets, e. B. by Michael Richey and Barthold Heinrich Brockes . It made an essential contribution to the tradition and self-image of North German poetry. Weichmann also became known as the editor of Brocke's and Christian Heinrich Postel's works . He helped the author of the Wertheim Bible translation, Johann Lorenz Schmidt , in his escape to Wolfenbüttel.

Weichmann received several honors. The London Royal Society accepted him as a member during his trip to England in 1728; the University of Oxford awarded him a bachelor's degree. His portrait painted by Balthasar Denner was hung in the Bodleian Library . In 1754 the German Society of Göttingen made him an honorary member. Since 1734 he was a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences .
