Matthias A. Chimole

Matthias A. Chimole (* 1916 in Nakhwala ; † November 18, 2005 in Lilongwe ) was Archbishop of Lilongwe in Malawi .

Life

Matthias A. Chimole received by his philosophical and theological studies at the seminary in Nankunda and Kachebere on 21 September 1947, the priestly ordination and was to 1970 pastors in Zomba.

In 1962 he founded Mngonoonda Thrift and Credit , the first cooperative bank in Malawi, which was unsuccessful.

On September 21, 1970 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Zomba . He was ordained bishop on December 13th by the Archbishop of Blantyre, James Chiona ; Consecrators were Jean-Louis Jobidon MAfr, Bishop of Mzuzu, and Eugen Vroemen SMM, Bishop of Chikwawa. On December 20, 1979, he was appointed Bishop of Lilongwe by Pope John Paul II .

Chimole was one of the leaders in the Bishops' Conference of Malawi. In 1974 he became president of the Christian Service Committee of the Churches in Malawi . A pastoral letter dated March 8, 1992, signed by Bishop Chimole and other bishops of Malawi, in which human rights violations by the government and social injustices were identified, aroused the ruling Malawi Congress Party’s massive displeasure , including open death threats.

He retired on November 11, 1994 and lived in a retired ministerial home in Lilongwe until his death on November 18, 2005.
