The Erzbistum Lilongwe ( lat. : Archidioecesis Lilongvensis ) is in Malawi preferred Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Lilongwe .

history

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe was on July 31, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Tanganyika as the Apostolic Prefecture Nyassa .

The Apostolic Prefecture Nyassa was on February 12, 1897 by Leo XIII. raised to the apostolic vicariate . On December 3, 1903, the Vicariate Apostolic Nyassa gave parts of its territory to the establishment of the Apostolic Prefecture Shiré . Further assignments took place on January 28, 1913 to found the Apostolic Vicariate Bangueolo , on July 1, 1937 to found the Apostolic Prefecture of Fort Jameson and on May 8, 1947 to found the Apostolic Prefecture of North Nyassa . On July 12, 1951, the Apostolic Vicariate Nyassa was renamed Apostolic Vicariate Likuni . The Apostolic Vicariate Likuni gave on April 29, 1956 parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Vicariate Dedza . On June 20, 1958, the Apostolic Vicariate Likuni was renamed Apostolic Vicariate Lilongwe .

On April 25, 1959, the Vicariate Apostolic Lilongwe was by Pope John XXIII. raised to a diocese with the Apostolic Constitution Cum christiana fides and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Blantyre as a suffragan . The Diocese of Lilongwe was founded on February 9, 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. raised to the archbishopric with the Apostolic Constitution Quotiescumque .
