Matthias Baltisberger
Matthias Baltisberger (* 1951 ) is a Swiss botanist and retired professor at the ETH Zurich . Its botanical author abbreviation is " Baltisb. ".
Life
Baltisberger studied biology at the ETH Zurich until 1976. This was followed by a doctorate at the ETH Zurich with Professor Hans Hess with a doctoral thesis in systematic botany. After completing his dissertation (1979), he took on teaching positions in systematic botany as well as the curatorial management of the globally important herbarium of flowering plants at the ETH Zurich. In 1987 he was given overall responsibility for teaching systematic botany at the ETH Zurich. In 2003 he was awarded the title of professor at the ETH Zurich.
Baltisberger has been retired since 2016.
research
Baltisberger's research interests lie in systematic botany:
- Species of the genera Achillea , Draba , Ranunculus and Stachys
- Areas examined: Alps and adjacent mountains, Balkan peninsula , Mediterranean area
- numerous publications with a focus on systematics , phylogeny and cytology
Awards
Baltisberger was honored with the following prizes:
- 2004: MedidaPrix (Media Didactic Prize from Germany, Austria and Switzerland) for the Virtual Excursion learning tool
- 2005: Golden Owl (best lecturer in the Department of Environmental Sciences at ETH Zurich)
- 2007: Golden DNA (best lecturer in the Department of Biology at ETH Zurich)
