Matthias Blüher

Matthias Blüher (* 1970 in Leipzig ) is a German endocrinologist and professor at the Leipzig University Hospital . Since 2019 he has also been director of the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolism, Obesity and Vascular Research in Leipzig, or HI-MAG for short, which was founded in June 2018, an institute of the Helmholtz Zentrum München . He mainly deals with pathological overweight (obesity), adipokinetic hormones , insulin resistance and diabetes (type 2 diabetes mellitus).

life and work

Matthias Blüher completed his medical studies from 1990 to 1996 at the University of Leipzig and graduated with the state examination in October 1996, whereby he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation from 1992 to 1997 . The course was followed by employment as a medical assistant at the Institute for Clinical Chemistry, Pathobiochemistry and Laboratory Medicine with a doctoral thesis with Richter until December 1996 and then training as a specialist in internal medicine at the Medical Clinic and Polyclinic III with Ralf Paschke and Michael Stumvoll from January 1997 to December 2004.

In 2000 Blüher completed his doctoral thesis and received his doctorate, after which he worked from September 2000 to December 2002 with a scholarship from the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina as a postdoctoral fellow with CR Kahn at the Joslin Diabetes Center of Harvard University Boston . In December 2004 he completed his specialist training in internal medicine and in January 2003 took up a position as head of the junior research group for endocrinology at the Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research (IKFZ) Leipzig.

From December 2004 to November 2005 he was C3 Professor for Molecular Endocrinology at the University of Cologne and since December 2005 he has been W2 Professor for Molecular Endocrinology at the Medical Clinic III of the Leipzig University Hospital. In October 2006 Blüher also became head of the DFG research group "Atherobesity" at the University of Leipzig. He is currently investigating which mechanisms lead to obesity and abnormal fat distribution and how these contribute to cardio-metabolic secondary diseases.

In 2003 Matthias Blüher received the German Obesity Research Award, which was presented at the annual meeting of the German Obesity Society (DAG). In 2008 he was awarded the Ferdinand Bertram Prize of the German Diabetes Society (DDG). In 2015 he was awarded the Minkowski Prize by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) .

In 2019 he appeared in a contribution to the NDR television program Visite .
