Matthias Casse

Matthias Casse (born February 19, 1997 in Mortsel ) is a Belgian judoka . He was European Champion and World Cup runner-up in 2019.

Athletic career

Casse has already won Belgian titles in his respective age group since 2010. In 2014 he won the Belgian championships in the lightweight adult class , the weight class up to 73 kilograms. In 2016 he switched to light middleweight, the weight class up to 81 kilograms, and immediately became Belgian champion in this weight class. In 2017 he won the U21 World Championships, he was the first Belgian junior world champion since Ulla Werbrouck in 1990. In 2018, Casse took seventh place at the World Championships in Baku. In the same year he won his third national championship title.

In 2019 the European Championships were held as part of the European Games in Minsk. Casse defeated the German Alexander Wieczerzak in the quarter-finals and the Georgian Luka Maisuradse in the semifinals . After his final victory over the Bulgarian Iwajlo Ivanov , Casse was European champion. Two months later, the World Championships took place in Toiko . Cassse defeated the German Dominic Ressel in the quarter-finals and the Iranian Saeid Mollaei in the semi-finals . In the final he was defeated by the Israeli Sagi Muki .
