Matthias Gehler

Matthias Gehler (born August 4, 1954 in Crimmitschau ) is a German journalist . He was government spokesman in the de Maizière cabinet , the last GDR government under Lothar de Maizière . Since 1992 he has been head of programs at MDR Thuringia (formerly MDR 1 Radio Thuringia).

Life

Matthias Gehler grew up with two younger siblings in what he said was a very religious and liberal home. He refused membership in the GDR youth organization FDJ . After graduating from school, he learned to work as an electrician for systems engineering in a private medium-sized company in Crimmitschau.

Gehler studied 1975-1980 theology at Friedensau University of Free Church of Seventh-day Adventists . From 1984 he studied psychology and communication at the University of Exeter (Great Britain). He was a pastor until he left the church service in 1987 due to his divorce. He then worked - initially as a technical editor - for the Neue Zeit newspaper publisher. In addition, Gehler appeared as a freelance songwriter and gave around 50 concerts per year.

In 1990 Lothar de Maizière brought him to the cabinet of the first freely elected GDR government as state secretary and government spokesman. His deputy was Angela Merkel . After reunification, he advised the Federal Press Office . In 1991 he was a member of the advisory staff of the Broadcasting Commissioner for the new federal states and was significantly involved in the reorganization of public broadcasting in the new federal states.

Matthias Gehler has been working for Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk since November 1991 . He is editor-in-chief of the radio, television and online programs of the MDR in Thuringia. Gehler has published in various subject areas and taken on teaching assignments, for example at the University of Erfurt . Matthias Gehler is married and has three children.

  • In 2015 Matthias Gehler published the 2nd edition of his CD "If Thoughts Had Wings" the bonus title " Crimmitschau " , with which he poetically pays tribute to his native city.
